Having problems with a honda engine.

Car: Honda, Accord LXi, 1987, 2.0     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Accord LXi Repair Manuals

Q.HI, We are having problems with a honda engine. 1987 honda accord, lxi, 2.0 engine, when you start the car the engine is fine, but after a few minutes, as the car is standing still..it reves up and slow down and reves up and slows down...etc..
I hve look at the vacumn hoses and redone the timing belt..still same problem..does that have a speed regulator on it or what do you think is wrong?

I already checked/done: changed and adjusted the timing belt and checked the vacumm hoses.

More Info required OK have you checked the intake manifold gasket or the pcv valve? Try pinching the vacuum line to the pcv valve and see if the idle steadies. If so you need to replace the pcv valve.

Addition Hold on I will tell them..

Addition anything other than that ..are there any relays or a speed regulator on that engine..like on a 3.0 mitsubichi chrysler engine?

Answer Ok as long as there are no air pockets in the coolant and the intake gasket is ok the most common issue is a faulty fast idle valve on the throttle body thats most likely the issue heres a picture I would start there. I have seen faulty ecms also cause this issue.
Once you replace the valve disconnect the battery both terminals clamp the terminals together for 15 minutes. Reconnect the terminals start the car and let it idle until the cooling fan cycles 2 times.
This will relearn idle and clear all systems.

Addition We are going to try this and see if it works..he is working on it right now...how do we get back to you if that is not the problem?
